Individual Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Psychoanalysis
As its name implies, individual therapy is a form of treatment in which a patient is treated on a one-on-one basis with a therapist. This allows the patient and therapist to focus on each other, establish a rapport, and together, strive to resolve the patient’s issue.
Although individual therapy may include many different treatment styles, two of the most popular forms of therapy are psychoanalysis and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
With psychoanalysis, patient and therapist study the organization of the patient’s personality and reorganize it in a way that tackles deep-seated conflicts and defenses. This is often a lengthy process that could last for years.
CBT, on the other hand, focuses on the development of the patient’s personal coping strategies as a means of solving problems and changing any unconstructive patterns in the patient’s thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. This approach can produce results in a handful of sessions.
